En 1963, alors que le monde entier apprend l’assassinat de John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro passe un séjour prolongé à Cuba avec Jean Daniel, journaliste français à l’Express. Deux semaines auparavant, Jean Daniel avait été reçu secrètement par le président Américain qui lui avait confié un message de conciliation à remettre à Fidel Castro. Le journaliste devient alors le confident privilégié de l’homme d’état bouleversé, et témoin de ses précieuses paroles : pour Castro, la mort du président américain signe « la fin de sa mission de paix ». Les publications du reporter dans la presse américaine bousculeront ensuite l’opinion et introduiront l’idée que la paix Cuba/États-Unis aurait été possible si l’assassinat de Kennedy avait été évité.
Castro voyait dans Kennedy le seul président qui crut à une coexistence entre socialistes et capitalistes. Pourtant, on sait les relations complexes que le révolutionnaire entretenait avec les États-Unis, cristallisées à Cuba par la nationalisation des intérêts commerciaux, qui provoquèrent l’embargo américain et l’invasion de la Baie des cochons, première défaite militaire américaine. Ce documentaire souhaite établir des ponts entre passé et présent à travers les images d’un Cuba comme figé dans son éternel embargo, et traverser l’histoire américano-cubaine de 1963 à aujourd’hui, en passant par le regard d’un reporter devenu grand. Existe-t-il dans l’Amérique de Trump, des voix qui œuvrent dans les pas de Jean Daniel pour le rapprochement tant attendu ?

In 1963, when the world learned of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro spent an extended stay in Cuba with Jean Daniel, French journalist for the Express. Two weeks previously, Jean Daniel had been received secretly by the American president who had entrusted him with a message of conciliation to be given to Fidel Castro. The journalist then becomes the privileged confidant of the distraught statesman, and witness to his precious words: for Castro, the death of the American president signals « the end of his peace mission ». The reporter’s publications in the American press will then shake up public opinion and introduce the idea that Cuba / United States peace would have been possible had the Kennedy assassination been avoided.
Castro saw in Kennedy the only president who believed in a coexistence between socialists and capitalists. However, we know the complex relations that the revolutionary had with the United States, crystallized in Cuba by the nationalization of commercial interests, which provoked the American embargo and the invasion of the Bay of Pigs, the first American military defeat. This documentary aims to build bridges between past and present through the images of a Cuba as frozen in its eternal embargo, and cross the American-Cuban history from 1963 to today, through the gaze of a reporter who has become tall. Are there voices in Trump’s America working in Jean Daniel’s footsteps for the long-awaited rapprochement?
