Darlan, le troisième homme de Vichy
Darlan a été le personnage le plus obscur du régime de Vichy, le moins connu, le plus tortueux. Le dessein politique du « troisième homme » de Vichy l’orienta le plus résolument vers sa propre conception de l’avenir du pays, tant sur le plan extérieur que sur le plan intérieur, mais un avenir délibérément sans foi ni loi. Darlan et son équipe de « techniciens », avaient tout fait en un temps record pour « moderniser »l’appareil d’état, pour faire de la France, débarrassée du Parlement et des contrepouvoirs, le laboratoire de la technocratie, s’avérer être un pont entre Vichy et la France d’après guerre, et même d’aujourd’hui.

Darlan was the most obscure character of the Vichy regime, the least known, the most tortuous. The political design of Vichy’s ‘third man’ most resolutely oriented him towards his own conception of the future of the country, both externally and internally, but a future deliberately devoid of faith or law. Darlan and his team of « technicians » had done everything in record time to « modernize » the state apparatus, to make France, stripped of Parliament and its checks and balances, the laboratory of technocracy, to prove to be a bridge between Vichy and postwar France, and even today.
