Vivement le cinéma / Pictures in motion
Le cinéma a été découvert au terme d’un foisonnement d’expériences et d’inventions qui a abouti presque par accident à l’invention du cinématographe Lumière et aux féeries des premiers films de Méliès… Cent ans plus tôt, à la fin du Directoire, le physicien-aéronaute Etienne-Gaspard Robertson donnait déjà des séances de projection de Fantasmagorie en faisant danser les diables et les spectres dans la nuit artificielle… D’outre tombe, Robertson va raconter comment, après lui, des savants comme des illusionnistes, artistes, photographes, inventeurs, Joseph Plateau, Emile Reynaud, Eadweard Muybridge, Etienne-Jules Marey ou Thomas Edison, chercheront à attraper le secret du mouvement. Leurs images fragiles et précieuses éclairent la préhistoire du cinéma.

The cinema was discovered at the end of a profusion of experiments and inventions which led almost by accident to the invention of the Lumière cinematograph and to the magic of Méliès’ first films … One hundred years earlier, at the end of the Directory , the physicist-aeronaut Etienne-Gaspard Robertson was already giving screenings of Phantasmagoria by making the devils and specters dance in the artificial night … Beyond the grave, Robertson will tell how, after him, scientists as illusionists, artists , photographers, inventors, Joseph Plateau, Emile Reynaud, Eadweard Muybridge, Etienne-Jules Marey or Thomas Edison, will seek to catch the secret of the movement. Their fragile and precious images shed light on the prehistory of cinema.
