Un été à la Garoupe / A Summer in Antibes
Plus qu’un journal de voyage surréaliste, ce film raconte l’amitié qui lie un groupe de peintres, de photographes et de poètes passionnés d’art. L’été 1937, Man Ray et sa jeune compagne Ady Fidelin, retrouvent un groupe d’amis à la pension Vastes horizons, dans le village de Mougins, sur les hauteurs d’Antibes. Il y a le poète Éluard et sa femme Nusch, Roland Penrose et sa future femme Lee Miller, Picasso et Dora Maar. Man Ray a emmené avec lui sa caméra et une nouvelle pellicule kodachrome couleur qu’il souhaite expérimenter. Les films de Man Ray sont à chaque fois des expériences filmiques d’avant-garde. Il filme ses amis, fait tournoyer la lumière, floute l’image, s’amuse, déshabille souvent les femmes, telle la mythique Kiki de Montparnasse ou la fascinante Lee Miller… À Mougins, Man Ray décide de tourner un petit film avec sa famille de cœur. Construit en saynètes, drôle, direct et riche en images ludiques, le film prendra comme titre La Garoupe, la plage d’Antibes qui les accueillent chaque jour. Ce film constitue le fil rouge de ce récit…

More than a surrealistic travel journal, this film tells the story of the friendship between a group of painters, photographers and poets passionate about art. In the summer of 1937, Man Ray and his young companion Ady Fidelin met up with a group of friends at the Vastes horizons pension, in the village of Mougins, on the heights of Antibes. There is the poet Éluard and his wife Nusch, Roland Penrose and his future wife Lee Miller, Picasso and Dora Maar. Man Ray brought with him his camera and a new color kodachrome film he wanted to experiment with. Man Ray’s films are avant-garde film experiences every time. He films his friends, turns the light, blurs the image, has fun, often undresses women, such as the legendary Kiki de Montparnasse or the fascinating Lee Miller… In Mougins, Man Ray decides to shoot a small film with his family at heart. Built in sketches, funny, direct and rich in playful images, the film will take as its title La Garoupe, the Antibes beach which welcomes them every day. This film is the common thread of this story …
